Over the last 8 years at Well Grounded we’ve supported over 500 people to access careers in coffee. We witness, in just a few weeks, a passion and love for coffee ignite. However, we noticed that so many of our Graduates consider leaving the industry within two years. As part of our Progression and Change Initiative we commissioned a piece of research to review the motivators, barriers and opportunities for progression in specialty coffee.

Motivators to join the industry: A love of coffee

Barriers: Individuals identify the top barriers to progression as pay, lack of structured career paths, skills and training, and an unclear understanding of career opportunities

Solutions: Best practice exists but employers and employees want more structured and unstructured training and development pathways

Early leavers: 68% of respondents left coffee within 2 years

Progression: 70% of respondents would like to progress their careers in coffee

Recommendations: Training, development and career pathways, a focus on inclusion, collaboration and further research.
